Abraham Lincoln Silver Dollar Commemorative

This year – 2009 – will mark the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln’s birth. The Abraham Lincoln Silver Dollar pays tribute to his history with a pleasing and honorable design. In 2006, the Abraham Commemorative Coin Act was signed into law that requires the Treasury to mint $1 silver coins as a commemorative. The face of the coin is a picture of Lincoln, which highlights his strengths and determination. The back features the closing remarks of the Gettysburg Address. The face was designed by Justin Kunz and sculpted by Don Everhart. It was based on a sculpture of Lincoln by Daniel Chester. The back of the coin was sculpted by Phebe Hemphill.
In dedicating the Gettysburg National Cemetery at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, site of one of the fiercest battles of the war, Lincoln reminded the country with his powerful speech and the world, why it was necessary:
“we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain — that this Nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom — and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”
Those last words are inscribed on the back of the Abraham Lincoln Commerative Silver Dollar.
The fees from the sale of the coins are authorized to be paid to the commission which sponsors the coin and will also continue the study of his life and preservation.

Commemorative Coins Information

Commemorative coins are coins that were issued to commemorate some particular event or issue. Most world commemorative coins were issued from the 1960s onward, although there are numerous examples of commemorative coins of earlier date. Such coins have a distinct design with reference to the occasion on which they were issued. Many coins of this category serve as collectors items only, although some countries are also issuing commemorative coins for regular circulation. Vast numbers of thematic coins are continuously being issued, highlighting ancient monuments or sites, historical persona, endangered species etc. While such thematic coins may or may not commemorate any particular event or jubilee, the distinction between commemorative coins and thematic coins is sometimes ignored.
